Chamonix

Chamonix is a proper town rather than just a resort and it is active all year round. For those willing to make the effort there are a thousand ways to have fun in the valley. Skiing and climbing are obviously the main draws, but the mountain-biking, white-water sports and parapenting are also amongst the best in Europe.

For the less adrenaline-hungry there are some wonderful high and low-level walking trails amongst the stunning mountain-scape of the Mont Blanc Massif and the Aiguilles. The many cable-cars, buses and trains mean access is easy and you rarely have to walk back down the same way you went up. The trains that run through the valley into Switzerland carry bikes for free and it's fun to hop out further up the valley and ride back down.

Being a major town in the area for many years means that Chamonix also has a rich history and a culture that extends beyond that of normal summer and winter resorts. The many restaurants and cafés have as many locals visiting and working there as tourists. The prices are reasonable and the range and choice is full spectrum from 6-star haute-cuisine right down to hidey-hole burger-joints for seasonaires. Think typically French with an international twist.
